SKIN CONCERNS CAUSED BY FACE MASKS

Redness

Those who often wear a face mask have probably noticed that a face mask irritates your skin. Due to a constant friction against the surface of the skin it gets slightly damaged, which makes the skin sensitive and reactive. This manifests itself, among other things, in redness and itching. Fortunately, with the right care products you can go a long way!

Impurities and pimples

Also, your skin shows signs of acne. It’s a well-known skin concern that you can recognize by impurities and pimples and from which both young people and adults suffer.

When we think of acne words like ‘T-zone’ and ‘U-zone’ pop up right into our heads. The T-zone refers to our forehead, nose and chin. Those areas are more prone to acne during puberty due to hormonal fluctuations and excessive sebum production. Furthermore, the U-zone refers to the areas around the chin, jaw line, cheeks and mouth. Adults can get acne in those areas because of slow cel renewal.

And then there is 'maskne'. Does this new term ring a bell? Right, it's acne caused by your face mask.

WHAT IS MASKNE?

Since acne is caused by bacteria, it is not that surprising that wearing a face mask result in more pimples. Because the warm and humid air that you breathe out is trapped inside the face mask, you will get clogged pores. Also, this environment is very good for bacteria to flourish, which means that there are even more bacteria that cannot go away.

Without being aware of it, we also touch our faces more. As we take off the mask, for a nice breath of fresh air, and then put it back on, we transfer new bacteria to the face with our hands. Washing your hands more frequently is therefore key!

5 TIPS TO TREAT ACNE

1. Clean. Your. Face.

Cleansing your face daily (several times) ensures that all bacteria and dead skin cells are removed from your face. Make sure you use gentle cleansing products. Aggressive products, such as scrubs and alcohol products, provoke an increased production of sebum, which will only cause more pimples. Nomige's 2-step cleansing routine consists of a 2-in-1 cleanser and exfoliating tonic that pampers the skin with gentle, thorough cleansing.

Due to an increased risk of bacteria, you can apply some lukewarm water or the exfoliating tonic during the day. This will make your skin breathe again. Read: less chance of pimples.

2. Wash your hands regularly

Your hands are a source of bacteria and as we touch our face more often, washing your hands (with soap!) is key. Also get a moisturizing hand cream in the house for when you get dry hands

3. Choose a cotton or silk mask

Fortunately, there are already many variants of mouth masks, so choose a cotton or silk face mask. They are softer for your skin and are reusable. Pro tip: Change and wash you mask regularly, otherwise the bacteria will stay on it. Choose a fragrance-free detergent if you already have sensitive skin.

4. Avoid make up

Not only sweat and dead skin cells clog your pores. Make up is also a evildoer. That's why you should choose a colored day cream instead of a thick layer of foundation.

5. Try not to touch your face!

We know, it’s difficult not to squeeze the pimples. It can lead to scarring and even more acne breakouts.
