Protect your skin against wind and rain

In summer we take precautions to protect our skin against the sun. But what do we do with our skin now that autumn and winter are coming? Rain, wind, large temperature variations... These are all harmful to our skin. It’s especially tough on our facial skin. As temperatures grow colder we also need to change a few things in the way we take care of our body and skin.

Are wind, rain and cold bad for your skin?

Vitamin B5 supports the skin's barrier function. This is very important as it forms the protective layer of our body. If that barrier is well constructed, then our skin is able to retain sufficient moisture. Because Vitamin B5 contributes to a good skin barrier and a hydrated skin, it can therefore be used as a 'moisturizer'.

Vit B5 also stimulates the renewal of skin cells. This ensures that the skin has a healthy and fresh appearance. Also in wound healing we see an effective effect of vitamin B5 and can therefore also be used to improve scars on the skin.

What can you do to protect your skin?

1. THE RIGHT CREAM

Select a hydrating cream, preferably oil-based instead of water-based. You can tell the difference by the texture: oil-based creams often have a richer feel to them. You should also take care to choose a cream that is suited to your skin. Everyone is unique and that also goes for our skin. Nomige always takes this into account. Take the lifestyle test  to discover what your skin needs right now. Would you like a more in-depth analysis that doesn’t change over time? Then take a DNA test.

2. USE SHOWER OIL AND APPLY IT IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOUR BATH/SHOWER

Use a soap-free shower oil to cleanse your skin. Oil nourishes the skin with respect for the natural balance. It also ensures better protection throughout the day against elements that dry out the skin. When a moisturising cream is applied to a warm and still steaming skin, the cream will penetrate much better and retain the moisture. As a result the cream will be much more effective.

3. SHOWER IN LUKEWARM WATER

On cold days we like to take a steaming hot bath to get warm and restore our moisture balance. But we don’t realise that a hot shower or bath effectively extracts water from our skin through osmosis. What’s more, both the temperature of the water and the water itself extract the naturally hydrating lipids from our skin. This means that long and hot showers or baths are bad for your skin and may even cause dry skin. So take shorter showers with warm instead of hot water.

4. HYDRATE FROM WITHIN

It’s not just important to hydrate the skin from the outside with creams but also from within. You can do this by drinking enough water, even in the autumn and winter months. Eating foods with a high water content can also help. Examples include oranges, apples, water melons, kiwis and detoxifying vegetables such as celery, cucumbers and carrots.

5. AIR HUMIDIFICATION

Often when the central heating is on, the air is also drier. Low air humidity indoors is typical for the cold winter months. An air humidifier may help to restore the humidity level in your home. This can be particularly useful in the bedroom because we spend so much time there. This will help your skin recover during the night.

6. CHANGE YOUR CLEANSER

Some products do the skin more harm than good. They are intended to remove dirt and make-up but at the same time they also eliminate skin lipids, causing the skin to dry out. Hence the importance of using a mild product. the gentle removal of dead skin cells.
