The sensorial experience of cosmetic textures
YOU ONLY HAVE ONE CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION
This is also true for skin care products. They are often judged by their scent and sensorial features, as these are the only characteristics you can immediately evaluate. A buy / no buy decision is quickly taken, based upon your subjective preference. And although there is a saying ‘there’s no accounting for taste’, let me tell you a bit more about cosmetic textures. They have a more functional contribution than you might think.

It is not only the ‘base’ or texture of the emulsion that plays a role, but also the type of active ingredients and the concentration thereof. As a result, it is perfectly possible to tackle dry skin with a lighter texture such as a lotion. For example: the active ingredients urea, glycerine or hyaluronic acid are all water soluble. They can be perfectly incorporated in a gel-like structure and yet provide intense hydration, although the base does not contain a significant portion of lipids. These active ingredients work by attracting water molecules and attaching themselves to the skin surface, keeping it supple and hydrated.
In addition to texture, skincare packaging is also important. Perhaps more important than you thought.
