Skincare and sports

Training is good for both your mental and physical health. But don't forget that it is also important to take care of your skin before, during and after training.

BEFORE

CLEANSING

If you're about to exercise, it's best to do so with a clean, makeup-free face. So it is important to clean your face first. During the workout your skin needs to be able to breathe. Makeup and occlusive creams can clog your pores and cause pimples.  Therefore, clean your face with a mild milk or oil, followed by a water-based cleanser (exfoliant, tonic, micellar water...).

Tip: Check out the 'Nominal 2-step cleansing routine' on YouTube.

DON'T TOUCH YOUR FACE

When you go to the gym, try not to touch your face too much. Gym objects or fitness equipment can be a breeding ground for bacteria. If you often touch your face or body during exercise, the bacteria can be transmitted directly to your skin, which can lead to rashes. It is also a good idea to wipe the equipment with antibacterial wipes before use.

SUN PROTECTION

If you're going to train outdoors, don't forget to apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 to your skin. Preferably also choose a waterproof sun cream, so that your skin remains protected when you sweat. It is crucial to protect your skin from sun damage to prevent skin aging and skin cancer.  For the same reason it is better not to exercise outside between 10.30 and 15.00 hours. The UV rays, which cause sunburn, are strongest during this period.

AFTER

CLEANSING

After exercise it is again very important to cleanse your skin to remove sweat, dirt and any bacteria. Water alone is often not enough to rinse away dirt or sweat. Again, use a mild cleansing milk (e.g. Nominal 2-in-1 cleanser) to remove the dirt in combination with a water-based cleanser (e.g. Nominal exfoliating tonic) that gently removes dead skin cells.

Try to clean your face as soon as possible to avoid pimples afterwards. A quick cleansing of the skin is also useful to cool the skin and prevent small blood vessels in the skin from breaking.

HYDRATE

After cleansing your face it is important to hydrate your body and skin, because we lose a lot of water (sweat) during a workout. On the one hand you need hydration from the inside by drinking a lot of water. On the other hand, the skin can be hydrated by applying a moisturizer after the workout. Examples of ingredients with moisturizing properties are: glycerin, sorbitol, propylene glycol, hyaluronic acid, urea...

It is crucial to moisturize your skin if you often do outdoor sports (cycling, skiing, ...). External factors such as cold and wind can dry out the skin even more.
