What face cream is good for an oily skin?

Do you have an oily skin?
An oily skin can be unpleasant and a lot of people with an oily skin have difficulties choosing the right skincare products. Therefore, Nomige selected the most important principles and tips for this skin type.

Read more about it in this blog.

Oily skin type

People who have an oily skin often have shiny areas on their face (forehead, nose, chin, ...) and may deal with breakouts on a regular basis. Oily skin types usually have larger, more noticeable pores.

Your body produces sebum (oil) to keep your skin soft and supple, but if too much sebum is produced, it can lead to acne flare-ups and oiliness. Hormones play an important role in this process. The higher amount of androgens present, the more sebum is produced, which then sits on the surface of the skin, creating an oily sheen. Some people see their oily skin fade with time, especially after puberty finishes. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for everyone.

DONT'S

A typical (bad!) habit of people with oily skin is using aggressive skincare products (for example alcohol in skincare products, scrubs...), which lead to dehydration of the skin. This gives people the feeling that the problem is solved because the skin feels less oily and dry, in the short term. By drying out the skin, the sebum glands are stimulated to make even more sebum. So at the end, there is even a higher sebum production than before. Moreover, products dehydrating the skin are very harmful for your skin barrier; they break down our natural protective layer. It is therefore better to use mild products.

DO'S

MORNING ROUTINE

1) Cleanse your face using lukewarm water to open the pores and wipe with a clean face cloth.

2) Before applying products, splash your skin with cold water to help close your pores.

3) We recommend keeping oily skin hydrated and healthy by using a rich and non-comedogenic day cream that pulls double-duty to minimize pores and control oil. It is a misconception that only light and watery creams or gels are good for an oily skin. Don’t be afraid to use a day cream that feels 'richer', it is even better for oily skin types to use a cream based on oil (and water). We can explain this with the principle of 'reverse psychology': by adding more lipids in your cream (a rich cream), a negative feedback loop is created, which reduces the endogenous sebum production.

4) When applying make-uplimit this to the minimum. People with an oily skin have the habit to use a lot of make-up to hide pimples and shiny areas on the face. As a result, your pores will be closed off and more pimples may develop. The start of a vicious circle. If you use make-up, choose as much as possible for natural and non-comedogenic products.

EVENING ROUTINE

1) Start by cleansing you skin with a mild oil or milk and exfoliating tonic. A good cleansing routine in the evening is crucial for a healthy and radiant skin. If you do not clean the skin properly, dirt remains on your skin and clogs your pores. Which leads to inflammation, pimples and acne.

2) Use a purifying mask (1 or 2 times a week)

3) Keep your skin moisturized at night with a nourishing moisturizer.  At night, the skin is more permeable in two directions (water from the inside to outside – active substances from the outside to the inside). Hence, the importance of a night cream with high-quality active ingredients. It is wrong to think that a thick occlusive cream is better at night. This covers the skin and forms a layer on the skin, which could lead to a ‘lazy’ skin. The biological processes of your skin (which are so important at night) are no longer stimulated.
