UVA and UVB rays

Have you ever wondered about the effect of UV rays on your skin?
When we lie in the sun on a sunny summer day, we only feel a warm feeling on our skin, but let's see how UV rays still affect our skin.

Same, but different

Both UVA and UVB rays give your skin a beautiful tan. In addition, UV rays can also come from artificial sources, such as tanning beds .

UVA and UVB are both part of ultraviolet light and are harmful to the skin. But there are still some differences . Let's go deeper into this.

UVA rays: skin aging

UVA rays have a higher wavelength but lower energy level than UVB rays and therefore penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin, where they affect the cells in the dermis .

What exactly does "affect cells" mean?

Because UVA rays penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin (the dermis), they accelerate the skin aging process . Not surprising when you know that the dermis contains collagen fibers that keep the skin firm.

In addition, UVA rays that penetrate your skin can lead to the formation of free radicals that can cause skin cancer .

Do you want to prevent your skin from aging faster? From now on, apply sun cream daily.

UVB rays: sunburn

Primarily, UVB is responsible for the production of vitamin D , which makes you feel happy. Nice right? :)

In addition, UVB rays help your skin tan (the tan that lasts for a while) because it activates melanin production. Remember: melanin production is a natural defense mechanism that protects your skin cells.

Unfortunately, as a result of melanin production, your skin is also more susceptible to sun spots . That's one of the reasons why you should wear sunscreen so that melanin production doesn't go into overdrive.

Unlike UVA rays, UVB rays have a high energy that causes the top layer of skin (epidermis) to turn red. Also called " sunburn." Also, due to their higher energy, they can penetrate directly into your DNA and cause mutations that lead to skin cancer.

Skin tip from Dr. Barbara Geusens

Keep yourself and your skin healthy

Not convinced you should wear sunscreen every day? Maybe these facts can change your mind:

  • One sunburn can nearly double your lifetime risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer .

  • Unlike UVB rays , UVA rays are not absorbed by the ozone layer and are not filtered by windows or clouds. This means that you are ALWAYS exposed to harmful UV rays.

Protect your skin from now on with our Nomige High Protection Sun Cream SPF30+ , suitable for all skin types.
