Vitamin B and beauty
Vitamins are important for the human body and certainly for the skin. Vitamin B is one of those vitamins essential for your skin. In a previous blog, vitamin B3 was already discussed, but which subtypes are there and what else does this vitamin have to offer?
Vitamin B and the skin
Vitamin B is a water-soluble vitamin that the body does not make itself, but absorbs through food. It is a collective term for up to eight different types , namely: thiamine (B1), Riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B8), folic acid (B11) and cyanocobalamin (B12).
A lot, but which ones are really important for your skin? Our previous blog already described the benefits of vitamin B3 for your skin. Vitamins B5 and B12 also contribute to keeping your skin healthy.
Recap of the positive effects of vitamin B3
Vitamin B3 or niacinamide is a multifunctional ingredient for your skin. Here we briefly review the most important reasons:
- Reduction of hyperpigmentation in the face, more specifically melasma spots
- Support of the skin barrier and corresponding moisture balance of the skin
- Antioxidant that helps neutralize oxidative stress
- Soothing and calming effect on the skin
What is vitamin B5 and in what food can we find it?
Vitamin B5 , pantothenic acid or panthenol (provitamin B5) is a water-soluble vitamin that is important for the repair of the skin barrier. The acid form can be found in various types of food: meat, eggs, legumes, wholemeal products, milk and milk products, fruit and vegetables. Eating a variety of foods ensures that your body absorbs this vitamin sufficiently.
What is the impact of vitamin B5 on your skin?
Vitamin B5 supports the skin's barrier function. This is very important as it forms the protective layer of our body. If that barrier is well constructed, then our skin is able to retain sufficient moisture. Because Vitamin B5 contributes to a good skin barrier and a hydrated skin, it can therefore be used as a 'moisturizer'.
Vit B5 also stimulates the renewal of skin cells . This ensures that the skin has a healthy and fresh appearance. Also in wound healing we see an effective effect of vitamin B5 and can therefore also be used to improve scars on the skin.
Another positive effect of vitamin B5, via oral intake, is that it can also be used to i mprove acne and inflammation . Vitamin B5 has anti-inflammatory effects. Through this link you will find the study that shows these effects.
Please note, not all products with vitamin B5 are equally effective! The effectiveness depends on the dose and the formulation (a pill or cream/serum). Keep in mind: a cream with a low dose of vitamin B5 (<1%) will not have magical effects on your skin.
Prolonged drinking can lead to chronic dehydration and disruption of the skin barrier's function.
What is vitamin B12, where can we find it and what is the impact on the skin?
Cobalamin or vitamin B12 is the only water-soluble vitamin that the body stores as a reserve supply. This vitamin has several functions for our body, for example it is necessary for the production of red blood cells that are needed to transport the oxygen in the blood and it supports the proper functioning of your nervous system. Sources of vitamin B12 are animal products, such as milk, milk products, meat, fish and eggs.
Vitamin B12 also plays a role in cell production and is therefore important for healthy growth/renewal of skin, hair and nails. When there is a serious deficiency, the nails can become discolored or brittle and hyperpigmentation or hair loss can occur. The deficiency of vitamin B12 can be restored with the help of food supplements. Don't worry! If you eat a healthy and balanced diet, a deficiency will not occur!
What benefits does vitamin B have for my skin?
There are many variants of vitamin B and many play a role in the condition of our skin. The main benefits of vitamin B are briefly mentioned here:
- Slowing down skin aging, where vitamin B3 is most effective
- Prevention of hyperpigmentation
- Antioxidant effect
- Help build a good skin barrier and hydrated skin
- Stimulating wound healing
- Stimulate the production of new cells and ensure healthy skin
Vitamin B3 is very often used in skin care products, eg serums. Vitamin B3 can also be combined well with vitamin A.
