By examining your DNA, we can gain more insight into your skin health&aging process. In the lab we analyze various genes involved in collagen metabolism, antioxidant protection, barrier function and skin hydration
Collagen is responsible for the firmness of your skin. Breakdown of collagen leads to loss of structure and loss of firm skin. We investigate matrix metalloproteinases (MMP1, MMP-3) that break down your collagen. If your MMP genes show single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP), or 'mutations', they are 'overactive' and breaking down collagen faster than we expect. This results in risk of accelerated aging, scar formation, redness, poor wound healing, etc.
Tissue damage from free radicals is one of the main causes of accelerated skin aging. Free radicals are formed by external stressors, such as tobacco, pollution or exposure to UV radiation. We have a natural 'built-in' protection mechanism called 'antioxidants' that can neutralize free radicals before they cause damage. When this defense mechanism is not functioning properly, SNPs ('mutations') will make traces of skin aging more visible. Nomige examines how well your defense mechanism is working by detecting mutations in antioxidant genes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD-2) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX). You gain insight into your risks of (sun) damage, or even pigment spots.
Your skin barrier has a double function. It protects you from external damage and prevents dehydration. A disrupted skin barrier results in sensitive and often dry or dehydrated skin. We investigate whether you have SNPs (mutations) in the genes that help keep the skin barrier intact and regulate moisture balance; called Fillagrin (FLG) and Aquaporin-3 (AQ3). You will understand if and why your skin is dry and/or dehydrated and if your sensitive skin has a genetic cause.
