Age perfect skincare: 30’S
Skin aging is a very complex process that is influenced by both internal factors (your DNA) and external factors (such as the sun, pollution, weather conditions, smoking…). Every skin is unique and so is the aging process. Still, there are certain changes and signs of skin aging that are common within a certain age range. That's why it can be helpful to adjust your skin care routine over the years . In this blog we list some important changes, signs of aging and associated tips for people in their thirties.
Please note that this is not a fixed guideline! For example, certain tips are described for people in their thirties, but they also remain useful for other age groups. So be sure to take a look at the other blogs: 20's , 40's and 50's . In addition, everyone ages differently and one tip will apply to you more than the other.
SKINTIP
Skin care by age category
Should you change your skincare routine as you get older? The answer is, yes, to an extent - check out this skin tip to learn more and gain insight from Dr. Barbara Geusens.
Skincare in your 30's
Skin aging is a natural process that starts around the age of 25, but signs of skin aging will only become visible around the age of 35 . So around 'thirties' is the ideal time to start using anti-aging products.
CLEANSE AND EXFOLIATE: REMOVE DEAD SKIN CELLS
From the age of 30 , the skin cell renewal cycle slows down. This means that your skin takes longer to renew dead skin cells. This can make your skin look a bit dull and dry . That's why it's a good idea to add an exfoliant or peeling to your skincare routine. This once or twice a week! An exfoliant or peeling is a cosmetic treatment used to remove superficial and dead skin cells in the top layer of skin . This allows new and young skin cells to move to the surface and gives your skin a fresh and healthy glow. There are 3 types of peels, each with a different mechanism of action. Would you like to learn more about peels or do you want to add this to your skin routine? Check out our previous blog about peels .
ANTIOXIDANTS
Tissue damage from free radicals is one of the main causes of accelerated or premature skin aging. Free radicals are reactive molecules formed by external stressors such as UV radiation, smoking and pollution. Our body naturally protects itself thanks to the production of antioxidants that neutralize the radicals and thus prevent damage to the skin. But when this defense mechanism is not functioning properly, signs of skin aging will be more visible. The use of antioxidants can therefore certainly help to keep your skin young!
Do you wonder if your defense mechanism or antioxidant capacity is working properly? Nomige examines how well your defense mechanism works by detecting mutations in the antioxidant genes superoxide dismutase (SOD-2) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX).
RETINOL TREATMENT
Vitamin A is a popular ingredient in treating acne, reducing wrinkles, boosting collagen and boosting cell turnover. Vitamin A exists in different forms. On the one hand, tretinoin, the most effective form of vitamin A, has been developed as an acne medicine and is only available on prescription. On the other hand, there is retinol , a less effective form of vitamin A, developed by cosmetic companies as an anti-aging ingredient. Retinol has positive effects on the skin and can be used in your thirties to reduce signs of aging. Keep in mind that there are some drawbacks that you should definitely take into account:
- It is an unstable ingredient that oxidizes quickly. Look for products with light and airtight packaging.
- Retinol products with a concentration of 0.3% or lower are not effective.
- Retinol can have an irritating effect on your skin.
- Do not use vitamin A derivatives during pregnancy or if you want to become pregnant.
- Use it as a cure, not permanently !
- Complete a cure during the winter. Vitamin A derivatives make your skin more sensitive to the sun and should therefore not be applied in the summer.
Nomige's most important tip : Use a daily moisturizing day cream or serum with high-quality anti-oxidants.
