Five tips for selecting a good skincare product
So many products, so much choice, but which product should you choose? Do you often have this problem when you are looking for a new skincare product ? Don't panic, you're certainly not the only one! With the following five tips, the decision will be a lot easier next time!
1. Know your skin
INTERNAL FACTORS (60%)
It is preprogrammed and you can't change it. It contains essential information about your skin and helps you understand how your skin will age and what you can do about it.

EXTERNAL FACTORS (40%)
External factors, such as your lifestyle , are not preprogrammed. They are, to a certain extent, under your own control. Factors such as smoking, sunlight, stress and sleep deprivation affect your skin.
60% is the founding base of your skin and is determined by your DNA
Your DNA makes you who you are. It tells you not only what care your skin needs, but also how your skin is prone to aging.
Your DNA does not lie and remains unchanged.
Our DNA products focus on your specific needs that result from your DNA profile. We gather this information with a DNA test . You can either order the DNA test separately or order it in a package with your products.
2. Be gentle with your skin

The skin, the largest organ of the human body, protects our body against harmful factors from outside (microorganisms, UV radiation, pollution ...). It is extremely important to take good care of your skin and support it's natural functions. Many skincare products, mainly cleansing products, act aggressively on the skin, which may disrupt the skin's natural barrier function . Some examples of products or ingredients that you should better avoid:
- Alcohol
- Aggressive peels & facial scrubs
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Tip: You could better cleanse your face by using a mild oil or milk, followed by a water based cleanser.

3. Hydrating ingredients
To hydrate means balancing the moisture in your skin. A well-hydrated skin looks healthier and less wrinkles are visible. Not all (hydrating) creams are equally effective, because there are different types of hydration : occlusive agents, humectants, and skin-identical Lipids.
Humectants are 'hygroscopic' molecules that capture water. Such molecules are naturally present in and on your skin and are called 'natural moisturizing factors'. They hold moist from the air and thus keep the skin supple and hydrated. Examples of humectants are amino acids, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea.
Skin-identical lipids , as the name suggests, also appear naturally in your skin. The upper layer of your skin consists of cells (corneocytes) that are surrounded by a mix of lipids, such as ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids. In the right proportions they form a compact structure and thus an intact skin barrier. If your skin barrier lacks essential lipids, you will get dry skin because water from the skin can evaporate more easily. Adding ingredients such as ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids to your creams can contribute to a constructive support of the skin barrier.

DNA analysis & report
Tip: We would recommend humectants and skin-identical lipids. The concentration of each type of ingredients that is needed in your skin care products depends on the extent to which your skin is hydrated and / or low in lipids. Where your specific needs are can easily be measured by doing your DNA test.
4.Packaging
The packaging of a product is the first thing you see. It is not only important that it looks good but also that it stores the ingredients effectively. Many brands still opt for the (glass) jars, while this is a no-go for most ingredients! In addition to being not exactly hygienic, many ingredients cannot 'survive' in this environment. They oxidize quickly as a result of exposure to light and air, which reduces their effectiveness. So, check the packaging before looking what's inside!
Tip : Avoid open, transparent glass jars. Ideally search for non-transparent and “airless” pump systems
5. Don't forget to protect your skin
You only have one skin, so please never underestimate the effect of protecting your skin and using sunscreen. Excessive exposure to UV radiation cannot only lead to premature skin aging but also different forms of skin cancer. Therefore, we recommend using a well-formulated SPF 15, 30 or 50 + day cream in your daily routine. This way you will never leave the house without a protected skin. A distinction can be made between two big groups of sunscreens: physical (mineral) sunscreen and chemical (organic) sunscreen.
PHYSICAL SUNSCREEN
A physical sunscreen uses minerals (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) to deflect UV rays away from the skin. These formulations literally sit on the skin and block or scatter UV radiation before it can penetrate the skin. Mineral sunscreens protect against both UVA and UVB radiation, and are the least skin-irritating sunscreens . This makes mineral sun filters most suitable for people with (over) sensitive skin. Mineral filters, however, have not been used in sunscreen products for a long time because they leave a dull white glow on the skin and are more difficult to formulate

CHEMICAL SUNSCREEN
Chemical (organic) sun filters undergo a chemical conversion after contact with UV radiation, whereby they absorb the energy and release it in the form of heat . Chemical sunscreens absorb both UV-A and B. Unfortunately, they have some disadvantages and are therefore not always ideal. Some are known to have an irritating effect on the skin, and some have the potential not only to penetrate into the skin, but also beyond penetrating the skin and thus entering the bloodstream. Moreover, they only start to be effective 20 minutes after application to the skin. They can also clog the pores , and thus exacerbate acne
Tip: Apply your day cream, which contains a chemical filter, in the morning and powder your face during the day with an SPF-infused mineral powder. Result: well protected all day long!
