Skin analysis vs. DNA skin analysis
1. SKIN ANALYSIS
A skin analysis is a consultation with a skincare expert or esthetician, during which they analyse your skin type and skin condition. In most cases they also prescribe a home skincare regimen based on their analysis.
The process
The analysis process can differ, depending on where you have the analysis performed. These could be some of the steps:
- In most cases the skin analysis starts with some questions and your face is being cleansed in order to remove makeup, dirt and residues.
- In bright light, and with the help of a magnifying lamp, or simply by the naked eye, your skin is being checked for its main characteristics: do you have an oily, dry, mixed or normal skin type. Or something in between?
- Next to your skin type they may also analyse other skin characteristics such as elasticity, wrinkles, hydration level, transepidermal water loss, pigment spots, redness, irritation, firmness… Tools, devices & probes can be used to measure these parameters of the skin. Keep in mind that these are snap shot analyses, by which we mean that it can differ throughout the day, time of the year, hormonal cycle. So if you have your skin measured at the beginning of a cold day or at the end of a hot day, you will get a different outcome, influencing the advice.
2. DNA SKIN ANALYSIS
In a DNA skin analysis, the basis of your skin, your DNA is being analysed. By performing a DNA test you can reveal your ‘true’ skin type, that is not influenced by surrounding, external factors, but basically measures the skin parameters & risk factors you are born with. Genes that play a role in your skin health and skin aging are being assessed, such as those responsible for hydration, barrier, collagen household, anti-oxidant production etc... Based on the presence of “mutations”, variations or “defects” we determine your risk profile for accelerated ageing, dry skin, redness, sensitivity, scarring, etc. By knowing your risk profile, you will understand where certain skin concerns really come from. E.g. if you suffer from dry skin, we can see whether you are genetically predisposed (more prone) for this, or whether it is due to some external factors, such as using aggressive soaps, being exposed to air-conditioning, the fact that it is winter..

Based on the cause for dry skin, for example, you need to treat your skin differently. So, a better understanding of your skin will result in a better approach. And on the basis of a DNA analysis, ingredients can be selected that will work very targeted in order to help to compensate for your genetic risks.
Your DNA report forms a kind of 'personal guideline' through all beauty products and also gives advice that goes a step further than just skincare. Based on your DNA report, we can also provide certain 'lifestyle tips' that help counteract your genetic risks. Think, for example, of certain nutrients (with antioxidants that you are naturally lacking) that can help combat your genetic risks of skin ageing.

What is the difference between them?
The biggest difference between an skin analysis as you know it and a DNA skin analysis is the fact that a DNA analysis is invariable over time, whereas an “snap shot” skin analysis can differ from time to time. Once you have performed a DNA skin analysis you will have this information and insights for the rest of your life. It is your “inherent” skin type.
In addition, a DNA skin analysis can easily be carried out from a distance, whereas this is not possible for the other type of skin analysis. A DNA test is sent to you, you take a saliva sample at home and send it back by post. Once your sample has been examined, your skin DNA report and products are sent by post. In this way you can work together with the best partners, even though they may not be close by.
Since your DNA does not change over time - you are born with this DNA - you only need to take a DNA skin analysis once. So it is a one-off cost. External & lifestyle factors do change over time and they will influence how your DNA will behave, whether certain genes are switched on or not. So we can definitely recommended to do both types of skin analyses to get the best insights and hence the most personalized approach.
